What Is Dow 30 Doing Today

Dow 30 is our name for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the index of 30 large, established US companies that is the oldest of the three American benchmarks. We track it through the DIA ETF, the exchange-traded fund that holds the index, so the price shown is the fund's price, roughly one hundredth of the index level, and the percentage move is the same.

Every 3 hours we score the latest US equity headlines on the same 0 to 100 scale we use for the 8 major currencies, then compare the Dow 30 score with the US dollar score from the same cycle. The gap between the two gives the Dow 30 read: equity sentiment running ahead of the dollar leans the index up, the dollar running ahead leans it down.

How to read the bias: A gap above +10 means a clear Dow 30 upside skew, below -10 a clear downside skew. Anything from -10 to +10 is Neutral: the Dow 30 and the dollar are evenly matched in the headlines and there is no clear lean.

Dow 30 Profile

  • Index: 30 large US companies, weighted by share price rather than market value, with industrial, financial, healthcare and consumer names alongside a few technology giants
  • Pip convention on this site: 1 pip is $0.01 on the ETF price. Index CFDs are quoted on the index level with their own point values, so check your own account specification
  • Trading hours: New York hours, 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern time (13:30 to 20:00 UTC in US summer time, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter), Monday to Friday. Outside those hours the last close is shown
  • Related markets: US 500 and US Tech 100 (the other US benchmarks), USD/JPY (risk appetite), XAU/USD (the safe haven)

What Moves Dow 30

The index reacts to the earnings of large industrial, financial and consumer companies and to the rates and trade backdrop. Here is what to watch on each side:

Dow 30 (DJI) side

  • Earnings and guidance from the 30 members, with the highest-priced shares moving the index most
  • Federal Reserve decisions and the path of Treasury yields
  • US inflation, jobs and growth data against expectations
  • Tariffs and trade policy, which hit the industrial and multinational names directly
  • Risk appetite: geopolitics, volatility and flows into or out of equities

US Dollar (USD) side

  • Fed (FOMC) rate decisions and the tone of the press conference
  • US CPI and PCE inflation prints
  • NFP non-farm payrolls (first Friday of the month)
  • US Treasury yields, particularly the 2-year and 10-year
  • Broad dollar strength: a rallying dollar is a headwind for anything priced in it

Common Questions About Dow 30

Is the Dow 30 bullish or bearish today?
The bias card at the top of this page shows the Dow 30 label. Free visitors see the label from the previous 3-hour cycle. Pro members see the live Dow 30 score, the gap against the US dollar, the drivers behind it and the session calls.
How is the Dow 30 sentiment score worked out?
Every 3 hours we read the latest headlines that touch US stocks and the US dollar: earnings, Fed policy, inflation and jobs data, tariffs and risk appetite. The Dow 30 gets its own score from 0 to 100, where 50 is neutral. The Dow 30 read compares that score with the US dollar score from the same cycle: a gap above +10 is Bullish, below -10 is Bearish, and anything in between is Neutral.
Why is the price the DIA ETF and not the index?
Index levels are licensed data, so the reference price on this page is the DIA ETF, the exchange-traded fund that holds the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Its price is roughly one hundredth of the index level and moves by the same percentage, which is what the session calls are scored on.
When does the Dow 30 trade?
The US stock market is open in New York hours, 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern time (13:30 to 20:00 UTC in US summer time, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter), Monday to Friday. The session call for the Dow 30 is published at the New York open; there are no Asia or London calls because the market is closed then. Futures and CFDs trade longer hours with your broker.
What moves the Dow Jones?
The main drivers are earnings and guidance from its 30 members, Federal Reserve policy and Treasury yields, inflation and jobs data, tariffs and trade policy, and risk appetite. Because the index is weighted by share price, a big move in one high-priced member can swing it on its own.
Is the live Dow 30 score free?
The Dow 30 pair label is free and runs one 3-hour cycle behind. The live Dow 30 score, the drivers, the session calls, the history chart and API access are part of Pro.

About Dow 30

Dow 30 is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the index of 30 large, established US companies that has been published since 1896. Unlike the S&P 500 it is weighted by share price rather than market value, so the members with the highest-priced shares move it most, and its mix of industrial, financial, healthcare and consumer names makes it a read on the old-economy side of the US market.

The biggest forces are earnings and the Fed, as for the other US benchmarks, with trade policy mattering more here: many of the 30 are multinationals and manufacturers that feel tariffs directly. Federal Reserve policy and Treasury yields decide how much profits are worth today; inflation and jobs data move the index through the Fed; geopolitics and volatility move it through risk appetite.

The US market trades in New York hours, 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern time (13:30 to 20:00 UTC in US summer time, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter), Monday to Friday, so the Dow 30 gets a New York session call only. The reference price is the DIA ETF, about one hundredth of the index level, and on this site one pip is $0.01 on that price. Trading index CFDs carries a high level of risk, so size positions with care.
